Throw a Neighborhood Mardi Gras Party

It is a great opportunity to learn about the culture of Louisiana and the south, as well as enjoy some of the great traditions of Mardi Gras. Throwing your own party is fairly simple, and your friends and family are sure to have a wonderful time.

The first step in throwing a neighborhood Mardi Gras party is to set the mood. This is a fun and colorful celebration, so you can decorate using bright streamers and other fun glittery decorations. The official colors of Mardi Gras are green, purple and gold, so make sure to use plenty of these colors Next you will want to find some great zydeco or jazz music. This is the traditional music in the region, and will be great for making your Mardi Gras party authentic.

You will also want to make sure that you have some traditional Mardi Gras and Cajun foods. Gumbo made with shrimp, andouille sausage and okra is a great dish for small parties that can have a sit down meal. Otherwise you can stick with simple cajun and creole-style appetizers. King Cake history and tradition

No Mardi Gras celebration is complete without a King Cake. This cake is actually a sweetened yeast bread, usually baked in a ring shape. The cake is frosted with gold, green, and purple icing representing in order, power, faith, and justice. Although this cake is colorful and tasty, the real fun hides within the cake.

The maker of each King Cake hides a token in the cake. The tokens used are a dried red bean or a figurine of a baby, representing the Christ child. When the cake is cut and shared, the finder of the hidden treasure is said to enjoy good luck for the coming year. The lucky recipient may also be expected to bake the King Cake or throw the Mardi Gras party for the following year.

After you have the setup for your party done, you need to have some activities. One great tradition of Mardi Gras are the masks. Have your guests make and decorate their own fantastic Mardi Gras masks. You can get the simple and undecorated pre-made masks that your guests can decorate, or you can use light cardboard or heavy card-stock to create masks. Make sure you have plenty of fun decorating materials, including colorful feathers, glitter, and much more.

Another fun Mardi Gras tradition are the parade floats. You can put on your own small Mardi Gras parade with a homemade float, or alternatively you can have guests create their own miniature float. You can use shoe or some other type of box as the base for a mini float. Make sure to have different types of wrapping papers and tissue, as well as other items to create a fun Mardi Gras float. When all of the floats are finished, you can have a contest to see who made the best Mardi Gras floats.
