How to Make a Twig Frame

Save your camping memories in this handcrafted twig frame.

This is a great activity to keep kids busy at camp and create a family keepsake to frame photos of your camping trip.

What you need:

  • Twigs
  • Cardboard - with the center cut out for the frame
  • Acrylic paint if you want to add color
  • Glue stick or if you have electric hot glue 
  • Twine
  • flower snips
  • found items for decoration
How To:
  • Take a nature walk and gather an assortment of twigs - remember to carry a bag for hauling you twigs back to camp.
  • Snip the twigs to the right size for the frame (an adult should do this or supervise closely)
  • If you are adding color this is when you should paint individual twigs.  It's nice to leave some their natural color.  The color will be rough and rustic - that just adds to the charm.
  • Glue the twigs closely together on the cardboard
  • Glue twine to the back of the cardboard
  • Glue found items like feathers or acorns to the frame.
  • Add you photos and enjoy!

How to Make a Pet Rock

Make your own pebble pet!

Looking for a pet that doesn't require much space, doesn't bark or shed?  The the pebble pet is perfect for you.

Pet rock and pebble pets are fun to make and easy to keep.

What you need:

  • Smooth oval or round pebbles or rocks (see if
  • Craft glue
  • Acrylic paint
  • Felt for ears
  • Scissors to cut felt
  • Google eyes or sequins for eyes
  • Colored pipe cleaners for legs and tails

How To:

  • Paint pebbles or rocks to look like the animals you want to create
  • Cut ears and glue to rock
  • Glue feet and tails
  • Glue on google eyes
  • Name your pet and enjoy!

Colored Sand or Salt

Make Colored Sand or Salt for Sand Paintings

Things you need:

  • Salt or white or natural colored sand
  • Food coloring
  • sandwich bag or paper cups  (you'll need 1 for every color you want to make)
How To:
  1. Divide sand or salt between plastic bags or cups 
  2. Add food coloring
  3. Seal plastic sandwich bag
  4. Shake until color is thoroughly mixed
  5. Mix food colors to create custom colors

This is a great project for teaching color blending:

It's fun to mix colors and see them "magically" change colors.

Blue + Yellow = Green
Blue + Red = Purple
Red + Yellow = Orange

Yellow, Blue and Red are primary colors
Orange, Purple, Green are secondary colors

How to Make a Seashell and Driftwood Mobile

Create a Lasting Beach Camping Souvenir!


Most beach campsites have plenty of driftwood and seashells.  These fun and easy to make mobiles can decorate camp and then a bedroom or porch back home as a lasting memory of your beach camping trip.

What you need:

  • Driftwood & seashells - this is a great excuse for taking a long beach walk  - remember to bring along a bag to carry your seashell and driftwood treasures back to camp
  • Other beach treasures - depending on where you are camping this could be tumbled seas glass, sand dollars, small interesting pieces of driftwood and bird feathers (check local ordinances some bird feather can not be    removed - like bald eagle feather is Alaska)
  • Craft wire - plain or sparkly or metallic
  • Twine, string or ribbons
How to:

    * Tie two pieces of drift wood together to form a X
    * Secure the pieces together with twine or craft wire by wrapping the the X in an overlapping patten until secure
    * Wrap seashells and beach treasures with craft wire - then attach to the ribbon or string
    * Attach the ribbons with the seashells and beach treasures to the drift wood X at varying lengths and grouping
    * You can either tie your ribbons to the hanger or wrap craft wire around the ribbon and attach with the wire

These make great gifts for friends back home!

How to Make a Pine Cone Mobile

Create a Magical Camping Souvenir!

Pine cones are usually abundant near forested campsites.  These fun and easy to make mobiles can decorate camp and then a bedroom or porch back home as a lasting memory of this summers camping trip.

What you need:

  • pine cones - pine cone gathering would be a great excuse for taking a nature walk to gather your pine cones - remember to bring along a bag to carry your pine cone treasures back to camp
  • acorns
  • Several wire clothes hangers - spray painted a color of you choice - this is best done before heading to camp
  • or pine branches or other scrap wood
  • Craft wire - plain or sparkly or metallic
  • String or ribbons
  • Glue stick to attache glitter and other embellishments
  • Spray paint or craft acrylics with cheap brushes - foam brushes work great but you'll need a bunch
  • Glitter and other items to embellish your mobile
  • Clear acrylic spray sealer

How to:

  • Paint and decorate your pine cones and acorns - have fun and let the kids use their imaginations
  • Wrap pine cones with craft wire - either all over to add to your design or just at the tip where you will attach to the ribbon or string
  • Attach the ribbons with the pine cones attached to the clothes hanger (you can put two clothes hangers together to create more dimension) or to the pine branches at varying lengths and grouping
  • you can either tie your ribbons to the hanger or wrap craft wire around the ribbon and attach with the wire
  • wrap acorns with craft wire and attach to the ribbon and then attach these to the hangers or branches.
These make great gifts for grandma and grandpa!
