Easy Thanksgiving Recipes for Kids

Easy Thanksgiving Recipes for KidsCooking is a wonderful activity for families during Thanksgiving. My family always spends the majority of Thanksgiving day cooking. Here are a few recipes that are great for children to take the lead on and participate in the family cooking tradition.

Homemade Biscuits

Biscuits are a nice simple recipe, but the process of making them is a lot of fun and they make a delicious accompaniment to any Thanksgiving meal and many other meals as well. This drop biscuit recipe is a great option and still look fantastic.


You will need:
2 cups all-purpose flour
2 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp baking soda
1 cup buttermilk
6 o 8 tbsp butter, melted and slightly cooled

Start by mixing the dry ingredients in a bowl. Then melt the butter and mix into the buttermilk before mixing into the dry ingredients. Stir the dry and wet ingredients together until just combined.

Preheat your oven to 450 degrees. You can shape and divide the batter by using a greased quarter cup measure. Fill a level measure quarter cup measure, then drop the shaped batter on  an ungreased baking sheet. Evenly space the biscuits and bake for approximately 12 to 15 minutes or until the tops are golden brown.

Turkey Cookies

Turkey Cookies are simply a simple sugar cookie recipe cut using a turkey shaped cookie cutter. After cutting and baking these cookies you can also use colored icing, sprinkles and other edibles to decorate these fun Thanksgiving themed cookies.

You will need:
21/2 cups all-purpose flour
2 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
3/4 cup sugar
3/4 cup butter
1 tsp vanilla
2 eggs

Preheat your oven to 400 degrees. Mix together the butter, sugar, eggs and vanilla. In a separate bowl mix dry ingredients, flour and baking powder. Blend wet and dry ingredients thoroughly. Cover and chill the dough for at least an hour before rolling, it is better to chill it for three to four hours.

On a lightly floured pastry cloth, roll the dough to an 1/8 inch thick using a rolling pin. Cut into the desired shapes. You can repeat the process with the scraps until all of the dough is used, but be sure not to use too much flour during the rolling process. You only need just enough to keep the dough from sticking. Place cookies on an ungreased baking sheet and bake for 6 to 10 minutes or until just light brown.

Allow the cookies to cool. If you want to ice your cookies allow the cookies to cool. If you instead want to decorate with colored sugar or any other item that is not adhered with icing be sure to decorate before baking the cookies.
